According to the U.S. Center for Health Statistics, a chronic disease is one lasting three months or longer. Chronic illness affects about 133 million Americans, or 40% of our population. Not only that, but about 1/2 of adults have a chronic condition. In addition, an increasing number, about 1/3 of Americans, are living with more than one chronic condition (National Health Council, 2016). Unlike the flu or strep throat, in which the person gets sick for a short time and then returns to normal health, a chronic illness doesn’t go away, even when the symptoms are

controlled.

If you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, it’s important for you to realize that there may be no medications that can make you totally well again. However, there may be medications and other types of treatments that can help you manage your illness on a daily basis. The first step in this management is finding a qualified physician to help you achieve an accurate diagnosis. This healthcare professional can then help you find the right treatment for your particular type of

condition.

On this site we will be showcasing various types of chronic illness and sharing coping strategies. We will not be diagnosing anyone’s medical conditions or giving any medical advice to any person. You should see your doctor for your personal medical diagnosis and treatment. However, we will be sharing positive coping skills and spiritual insights from my own experiences and from others who live with chronic illness. These are not to be used in lieu of qualified medical advice from your physician. Instead, the information you find here is meant to augment good medical care with tips on how to use other non-medical strategies to manage your condition on a daily basis.
